The Pentagon has awarded RTX subsidiary Raytheon a contract valued at up to $20.7 billion for production of Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles, known as AMMRAMs, according to defense procurement records. The deal represents one of the largest single missile contracts in recent U.S. military history and underscores Washington's push to rebuild weapons inventories drawn down by aid to allies.
AMRAAMs have been a centerpiece of U.S. air-defense assistance to Ukraine and other partners, placing sustained pressure on domestic stockpiles. Defense officials have repeatedly flagged inventory shortfalls as a strategic vulnerability, prompting Congress and the Pentagon to accelerate procurement timelines and funding for key munitions programs.
